Energy Performance Certificates (EPC’s) and Display Energy Certificates (DEC’s) effect us all. From April and October 2008 they respectively became mandatory to commercial premises whenever a building is constructed, sold or let.

The 160 million building’s in the EU use over 40% of Europe's energy and create over 40% of its carbon dioxide emissions and that proportion is increasing at an alarming rate. As a result of this the EU has introduced Directive 2002/91/EC, which along with other mandatory requirements enforces member states to ensure that the required EPC’s and DEC are introduced in accordance with the time frame shown.

How will the directive drive improvement ?

It facilitates requirements to measure energy use in buildings by:

• Introducing agreed measurements of relative energy performance
• Regular inspections and re-evaluations
• Requiring higher standards for upgrading larger buildings
• Improving standards for new buildings
